Poem Honoring Ed
Dennis
on his Receiving the
ASBMB-Avanti Award in Lipids,
June 2000
by John Exton, Vanderbildt University
Now we've been well wined and fed
I think it's time to honor Ed
In case you're unsure, I mean Ed Dennis
Who'll never in a million years be called "The Menace"
He's a man of integrity and a scholar
Who always wears a necktie and collar
He hales from Southern California
But he's no surfer, I've gotta warn yuh
He studied under Eugene Kennedy
And tackled his work with zest and energy
He learned work with lipids isn't easy
They're never soluble and always greasy
But he persisted with the right detergent
And a host of papers were soon emergent
And to this day, he loves those fats
Whether they come from Avanti or from rats
Ed is now recognized in various wayses
For his classic studies on phospholipases
Which he has now extended to macrophages
Which fill the JBC with many pages
For his long and very distinguished career
With more to come I do not fear
We honor Ed Dennis again tonight
A man who always gets things right!
