Prepared from the mild alkaline hydrolysis of the appropriate
tissue extract. The product is purified by high-pressure liquid
chromatography. Sphingomyelin is a white crystalline non-hygroscopic
substance, resistant to degradation by air and light. Note Avanti offers sphingomyelin from three sources:
egg yolk, milk and brain tissue. Sphingomyelin often shows
two spots on TLC plates run with chloroform-methanol-water
mixtures. The more rapidly moving component contains principally
the longer fatty acids. Whereas the slower component contains
mainly the shorter fatty acids. Reference
