Inhibitor of Platelet Activation
Trimethylsphingosine (TMS) is valuable in preventing in vitro platelet activation and promises to be a useful preservative for diagnostic testing of platelet activation.1 TMS and N,N-Dimethylsphingosine (DMS) could be useful reagents to inhibit cell surface expression of crucial selectins which promote adhesion of Le(x-) or sialosyl-Le(x)-expressing cells with platelets and endothelial cells.2
Cardioprotective Agent
TMS is a potent and effective cardioprotective agent that inhibits leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions and preserves cardiac contractile function and coronary perfusion following myocardial ischemia and reperfusion.3
Inhibitor of Tumor Growth
TMS and DMS had an inhibitory effect (via blocking of transmembrane signaling) on the growth of various human tumor cell lines in vitro. 4
Inhibitor of PKC
TMS is a stronger inhibitor of PKC than Sphingosine or DMS and is considerably less cytotoxic to neutrophils under the same experimental conditions. 5, 6, 7
